1: In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon
Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed:
then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters.
2: Daniel spoke and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold,
the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.
{wind = strife, great sea = people's, nations}.
3: And four great beasts came up from the sea,
diverse one from another.
{These are successive world empires since the time of Daniel;
Babylon was succeeded by the Medo-Persian Empire,
which was succeeded by the Graeco-Roman Empire,
which was succeeded by the Western European Imperial powers}.
4: The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings:
I beheld till its wings were plucked,
and it was lifted up from the earth,
and made stand upon the feet as a man,
and a man's heart was given to it.
{Babylonia; 1890–539 BCE,
an ancient Akkadian-speaking state based in the city of Babylon,
present-day Iraq and parts of Kuwait, Syria and Iran}.
5: And behold another beast, a second, like a bear,
and it raised up itself on one side,
and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth:

a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel,
after that which appeared unto me at the first.

which is in the province of Elam;
