Greetings Sistren and Idren

I was wondering what the I's think about Daggering? (The dance)

I know it's very important to separate reggae and dancehall from Rastafari, but still they go hand in hand when African / Jamaican roots and culture is represented. Sex is very much a divine thing. Jah instrument fi give a new jah life. And if you ask me like other I's sex is very very beautiful. So when it is represented as an art through a dance to a party, I don't know if you should see it just as a piece of art, something you can promote, or something that breaks the beauty between king and queen.

As you say, it's an art. An art is not necessarily good or bad. It is a reflection of people's everyday lives.
I do not like when people describe it as pornography as it means something completely different.

When it comes to "Daggering" the man follows his masculine instinct as part of the art. I like daggering and one should be proud of the Jamaican culture. I don't see it as dutty.

Well, I man still a virgin, but if I had to comment on this, I would say there is nothing such as music for the young or for the old. Discriminations in music industry is a thing of the dragon.

Now in Jamaica we had the rub a dub culture from the early 1940s-50s to the present. The music was simple and satisfying and people of all ages could come together in the party, both youths and the aged, white haired elders, men and women, and they would rub and dub together all night long. There was nothing vulgar about it. It was pure joy and niceness and positive vibes. Listen to Bunny Wailer's ballroom floor. Reggae was a cultural dance for cultural people.

With the invention of the dancehall culture in the 80s, there was nothing wrong about it at first. It was just sped up, energized reggae music with a faster tempo and toasted lyrics. The music was still reggae music, in a dancehall style. The 90's however brought a revolution in the dancehall. Drugs and guns surged into the ghettos and morality was lost and vulgarity and depravity set in. We had unconscious artistes come into the reggae dancehall scene with much folly, such as the discrimination of musical audiences for the youth, the aged, etc. It's during this period that vulgar dances were invented, because with all the alcohol, sex and gun in the ghetto, people became carefree and cared less about the worth of life .

I would say, any dance that is discriminatory and restricted to one age group and cannot be performed by people of all ages, young and old, is a vulgar dance. If you would be ashamed of doing it before your mother and father, then it's not worth your time and energy. Some people, however, have lost all sense of shame and self respect, and will do just about anything, anywhere.

To sum it up, vulgar dancing goes hand in hand with vulgar lyrics, where artistes sing about nothing but sexual acts, how they go about their "business". You realize you can not do vulgar dances to conscious, uplifting music - there must be a vulgar song to do a vulgar dance, like imitation of sexual practices that happen in secrecy between partners. This is not the nature of rub a dub, cause rub a dub is culture, from ancient of days, while them passa passa thing is more like pornography with clothes on. So some music style is totally not suitable for the elders, or anyone in particular.

Bless up King Black Christ in Flesh

I man love everything about your thread mi bredren. Virgin or not. Man don't need sexual experience to know that creation of life is beautiful. God made I through sex between Alpha and Omega. It can ONLY be beautiful. Every seed planted is life and InI choose life over death. Drugs and guns is suicide in all cultures. And I certainly do not want reggae to end in the same place as where hip hop has ended. Hip hop used to be an uprising force to wake up the blackness. They talked about why guns, drugs and gangsta life was in their community because of Babylon. Now the bulk of the genre glorifies it no matter how much the artists themselves will admit it. However we all know why people of today don't want their kids to listen to new skool hip hop. There is, the story of rapper Young Buck. He was allowed to release an album with a lot of "black on black Gangsta life"songs But his only song about police brutality he was not allowed to release by his label.

But when it comes to "Daggering" I think its different. The reason why I don't like to use "Pornography" fi describe the art is because of the meaning.

Pornography is ungodly sex on camera / virtual prostitution

Daggering is not real sex, but just an erotic dance. Erotic art.

If you ask I there are many privacy actions I would not do in front of my parents. I could kiss a gal pon di dancefloor, but still wouldn't like my mom to watch me kiss that gal. But it wouldn't be wrong. But I still get you. Its not an elder mans ting

The women I see daggering are very beautiful, and the men have such a handsome expression.

Black Christ in Flesh summed it up well.

Iman sight it as a Jamaican thing, not a RastafarI thing.

InI call Iselves RastafarI; would His Majesty go about "daggering"? Would Garvey or Howell, or any of the Incients?

Haile Selassie's nephew said that when he looked at his uncle, he saw Haile Selassie as the personification of dignity.

Ain't no way one can go about daggering in a dignified manner. And if ones tried to dignify it, they would stop with all that crazy dance and they'd start dancing in a nice way.
