Ethiopian System of Multiplication
Source: ncet,m.org.uk

The ancient Ethiopians had a way of doing multiplication where they only had to add and to multiply by twos. It is known as duplation and mediation (doubling and halving). A variation of their method is still used today in rural communities of Russia, the Arab world, and the Near East. The method involves placing each number being multiplied (multiplicand) into one of two columns. It doesn’t matter which. The left hand column is thought of as pebbles and the right hand side is though of as houses. The algorithm is to double the pebbles and take half of the houses, neglecting remainders by taking them away. The rows with an even number of houses are considered to be evil and are crossed off. The sum of the remaining pebbles is then summed.

6 x 9

Pebbles Houses
6 9
12 4
24 2
48 1

54

It may seem a bizarre way to multiply but it is actually a very logical method. Once children have practiced with one digit by one digit multiplications you can get them to try more difficult examples,

24 x 36

Pebbles Houses
24 36
48 18
96 9
192 4
384 2
768 1

864

The symbol for the ancient Kush/Kemet zero was the same as the hieroglyph for beauty, complete, and an abstraction of the Egyptian of a human windpipe, heart, and lungs. The consonant sounds were NFR; but the vowel sounds are unknown.

This one of the most amazing skills our ancestors possessed. I actually saw this a month ago on science program from bbc. It’s also to be found on youtube as a part (episode or whatever) in the “African American innovators” series. The most amazing part of this is the fact that it appears to be so magical for us ‘ordinary’ people yet we use it on a daily basis as it, binary math, is used to code calculators and computers with the only difference of computers and calculators being “able” to split integers into decimals whereas the original people, whose terrific ingenuity resulted this great piece of algorithm never needed to know squat about what in hell decimals were.

This great piece of news fueled my long entertained suspicion that Europeans never wiped out the entire history of black Africa without a reason. That it wasn’t just a simple cruelty and arrogance but because of much deeper reason, why would one burn others history books unless for a reason which could be to reinvent history and attribute it to oneself?

A famous example of a mathematical and astronomical manuscript

Hypatia: Ancient Black Woman Mathematician & Scientist

“One of the universal geniuses of antiquity, and the last great woman scientist of antiquity.”

She held a chair in the Philosophy Department at the University of Alexandria. She taught math, physics, astronomy, and philosophy. She wrote and published many works; one a treatise called the Conics of Apollonius, Arithmetica a commentary about her fellow mathematician, Diophantus’ works, and commentaries on the works of Euclid and Ptolemy who preceded her in the fields of math and science, giving her credit for inventing an apparatus to distill water and measuring liquid levels.
