THE PASSING OF HIS EMINENCE ABUNA YESEHAQ, ARCH BISHOP OF THE ETHIOPIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

His Eminence Abuna Yesesaq (formally known as Laike Mandefro) Arch Bishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (E.O.C) in Jamaica and the Western Hemisphere succumbed to his illness in the Newark Beth Israel Medical Centre, Newark New Jersey, USA on December 29, 2005 at approximately 11:15pm.

Abuna Yesesaq, a monk priest, was sent to Jamaica by His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie 1 and established the church on the 23rd of May 1970. He served the church in Jamaica for over 35 years establishing branches of the E.O.C islandwide, as well as, the Abuna Yesesaq Home for the Aged, the Black Lion Bakery and two early childhood education centres.

His Eminence established branches of the E.O.C worldwide including England, Canada, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, the US Virgin Islands, Guyana, St. Kitts and Bermuda. He served the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the United States of America for over 45 years and established churches in over twelve (12) states.

His Eminence petitioned the Jamaican Government in the 1970’s to stop the demoralization of Rastafarians in Jamaica.

On his first visit to Jamaica he baptized over 700 members into the Ethiopian Orthodox faith, converting them to the true faith of Ethiopia in which they could observe the sacraments of Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Holy Communion, Penance, Unction to the Sick and Holy Orders. He also ordained many priests and deacons.

Passing of His Eminence Abuna Yesesaq…
“Abba” (Father), as he was affectionately called has been a Soul Father, spiritual advisor, leader and an overall shepherd of his flock. His life long vision for the Western Hemisphere was to complete the building of the first Ethiopian Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral in Jamaica, which is currently being built at 89 Maxfield Avenue, Kingston.

At the time of his death he was 72 years old and is the first Ethiopian Orthodox Arch Bishop to die in the Western Hemisphere.

Although his funeral services will be held overseas, it is his expressed wish that his body be returned for interment in the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Jamaica after its completion
