Greetings I

Ras TafarI means "Head + who he is feared" or also interpreted as "he who inspires awe"

Ras Fetari(or Feteri) means "Head Creator"

Because this two words are very similar it got confused.

I first heard this independently from two Nyahbinghi Sistren, and later read it in an Amharic Dictionary.

I heard that TafarI is originally pronounced like TafarEE, but as I n I like the Ivine I, I n I say Ras TafarI I I I... so hIgh

.....hm...........sorry, but these answers don't satisfy I.
is it Ras Teferi or Ras Feteri/Fetari ? with "T" or with "F" at the beginning ?

so there are some who call HIM "Feteri" and there are some who call HIM "Teferi"........but which one is the right one ?

or is it up to every brethren/sistren themselves how to call HIM ?

if "Feteri" means "Creatah", what means "Teferi" ? the same ?
but "Teferi" means "he who is feared"......confusing.....

Greetings I

Alex, cool down man...

I do not know the word "TEFERI", I think you just confused "FETERI" in "TEFERI"...
And I also do not know anybody who calls HIM FETERI... because his name was and is RAS TAFARI.
When the JA Rastafarian of the early days tried to learn Amharic they just confused the meaning of TAFARI and FETERI...
So this was just a language mistake, seen?

I never heard someone calling HIM FETERI... many just thought the meaning of FETERI is the meaning of TAFARI.

Come on, that isn´t that difficult...

Bredda Alex,

I asked the I earlier where the I heard of Feteri. When the I didn't answer and spoke of Teferi instead, I just assumed you made a spelling mistake.

I don't think that he was ever called Feteri, I have never heard that. Maybe the I can ask who told you that and they can give you more information, I know nothing about it.

I have heard that people mistakenly thought that TafarI meant Creator, instead of "One to be feared", but I didn't know that Feteri was the Ethiopian word that meant Creator.

Every english text I have seen says TafarI. Including the ones where the translations were sanctioned by Haile Selassie I

Ark I
RasTafarI
Haile Selassie I

allright, so the name "Feteri" has never existed.

am I right ?

well yes, maybe I've just confused it and didn't remember this...
but why did I think of "Feteri" then ? ...hm...dunno. but there was someone who told me bout that "teferi"-"tafari"-thing and mentioned the name "feteri".....well...

yes I, bra natty jahphet anbassah, the I is right, it's not that confusing, but when that "feteri"-name appeared I just was confused...sorry

Greetings I

Again...

The word FETERI exists, it means "Creator"... and maybe somebody use it as name... but Haile Selassie I was called TAFARI.
Rastafarian confused that... but that has nothing to do with Ras TafarI himself!

I'll try it in german, well...
Also, das Wort TafarI bedeutet in etwa "der Gefürchtete", Feteri bedeutet "Schöpfer". Rastafarian haben diese beiden Worte einfach verwächselt und dachten TafarI bedeutet "Schöpfer/Creator".
Aber nur weil die einen Fehler machten hat das noch lange nix mit Ras TafarI selbst zutun.
Und ich glaub das Wort Teferi gibt es garnicht...
Hast dus jetzt?

There is a blessed family of Ethiopian Rastafari in this area and one of the bredren did explain to me that in amharic they do pronounce His Majesty's name Ras TeferEE. Ras Feteri is also a very legitiment Ethiopian name as the bredren Nyah Jahphet Anbassa I expressed.

InI do say "Ras TafarI" as InI deal with the I word sound. But it is good to be aware of the amharic pronounciation.

Blessed Love
