Can reggae music be copied?

Bob Marley: "Well, you see, the way I feel about de music, it can be copied, ya know. But... it’s not copy do it, it’s the feel. Ya know, it carry a feel. Where....if you explain it to a musician, dem know it, but dem can't do it.”

So, not to be tacky by using this comparison, but Babylon thinks that its currency notes are so valuable that it goes to great lengths to make sure that they can’t be counterfeited. JAH music is created in such a way that its notes can’t be counterfeited either. I once saw an unbelievably complex attempt at a mathematical analysis of the multiple simultaneous rhythms used in a Wailers reggae song –it was mindboggling. And, of course, even if one manages to fully capture and reproduce perfectly every beat of those rhythms, THEY CHANGE EVERY TIME THE SONG IS PLAYED BY THE TRUE MESSENGERS OF JAH!

I’d totally forgotten about this old Bob Marley video. I love the different kids at the party. The party reminds me of one I once threw while I was living in a barrio In Matagalpa, Nicaragua. The house I was renting belonged to a Sandinista doctor and I was taking Spanish lessons from an upper class Nicaraguan lady. At the same time I was teaching English & giving medical care to kids of all socioeconomic levels from the barrio. Social stratification in Nicaragua is very complex and culturally important. I doubt many people are aware of this if they're not personally familiar with Latin America and its archaic systems of social stratification (i.e., a system which is VERY cognizant of the shades of people's skin color). As an American, I was automatically relegated to the upper echelon of Nicaraguan society. Anyway, being a loving RastafarI who’s color blind and doesn’t care about people’s socioeconomic level (and oblivious to Nicaraguan social protocols at that point), I invited kids and their parents (i.e., friends and acquaintances) from all different levels (from poorest to wealthiest, lightest skin color to darkest) to the party. It was a MAJOR SOCIAL BLUNDER and at first I thought the party was going to be doomed to disaster as people clustered and huddled with other people of their own level and failed to mingle. The solution? Music. First I got some cumbia going. Nicaraguans are passionate about dancing and pretty soon people were forgetting about shades of skin color and relative family wealth, and just dancing together. The party warmed up and continued for hours as the music alternated between salsa, mariachi, ranchera and, of course, reggae! Socioeconomic levels and skin colors disappeared from consciousness. That’s the power of music to make people forget about Babylon BS like difference in socioeconomic level and shades of skin color. JAH! RASTAFARI!

Slowed down on a 12 inch vinyl ...crackling under the needle with the full force of Shaka's bassline on the keys. This will send chills.

Take oppressor to the hanging tree....
