using inspiration gained from a post by Ark I on racism ---- idecided to let the students work in groups and come up with a definition for "racism".
interesting results:
out of 30 groups of 4-5 students only one mentioned superiority/inferiority.
none mentioned having power over the group that you don't like
most mentioned color ---but also added things like religion, culture
all mentioned not liking or hating but not using that hatred to act out against them.
many called it racism if two people of different cultures (irish and english) don't like each other even though they may both be white.
it seems as if the term racism has become a term that they will use any time someone doesn't like someone who may be just slightly different than them.
I would love to hear any thoughts on the subject.

Interesting....
Racism like most ism's has become an instiutionalized word. What I mean by that is that the word carries with it a shared set of stereotypes by much of society.
In many cases the stereotypes are wrong, but in this case the children might not be wrong, but their perception of racial issues might only be scratching the surface of a deeper problem.
I respect what the I is trying to teach.
